Christmas and the Holidays on Oahu's North Shore: Events, Surf & Where to Stay (2026 Guide)
What Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's are really like on Oahu's North Shore: community events, winter surf, whale season and how to plan a group holiday stay.
Short answer: the North Shore is a good place to spend Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's, especially for a group, but it is not a quiet beach holiday in every week of the season. Late November through December is when the big winter surf arrives, so the water is for watching, not swimming. The trade-off is a calmer, small-town holiday feel, free community events in Haleiwa and Laie, and humpback whale season getting started. Here is what we know is happening, what changes year to year, and how to plan around it.
What the North Shore is like in the holiday weeks
Expect warm days, trade-wind breezes, and ocean conditions that are very different from summer. The same bays that are glassy swimming spots in July can be dangerous in December. Our month-by-month guide to the North Shore covers the seasonal swing in detail, and our guide to where to watch surfing shows the safest places to take in the waves from shore. Holiday weeks are also busy across Oahu, so lodging and rental cars book up earlier than in the shoulder months.
Community events worth planning around
Haleiwa Town Christmas Parade
The Haleiwa Town Christmas Parade is a long-running local tradition organized with the North Shore Chamber of Commerce. In 2025 it ran on Friday, December 12, in the evening, from Weed Circle to Haleiwa Beach Park, and it was free to watch. The date moves each year, so check the North Shore Chamber of Commerce before you plan around it. If you are staying nearby, walk or get a ride in early because Kamehameha Highway closes for the parade and traffic backs up.
Christmas in the Hukilau Marketplace, Laie
The Polynesian Cultural Center runs a free holiday village at the Hukilau Marketplace in Laie. In 2025 it ran December 15 to 22, from 6 to 8 p.m., with live entertainment, local artisans, a holiday train ride and scavenger hunts. It is a good low-cost evening for kids. Dates are announced each fall, so confirm them on the center's website. For more on the area, see our guide to things to do in Laie and Kahuku, and our honest take on whether the Polynesian Cultural Center is worth it.
Winter surf contests
The North Shore's winter contest season usually falls between mid-November and late December, and events only run when the waves cooperate. Watching is free. We have not seen official 2026 to 2027 dates published yet, so treat any date you see online as provisional and check the organizers' announcements.
Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's: how they differ
Thanksgiving week tends to be the best fit if you want surf viewing with fewer holiday crowds than Christmas week. Christmas week has the most events and the highest prices. New Year's is a good time for a reunion-style trip, since families are already traveling. If your group is deciding between weeks, the earlier the booking, the more options you will have.

Holiday meals on the North Shore
If you are cooking in a vacation home, stock up before the holiday itself, because grocery shelves and fresh-fish counters thin out around major days. The North Shore also has a handful of restaurants and resort dining rooms that offer holiday menus, but offerings and reservations change each year, so call ahead. For everyday eating, our guides to North Shore restaurants and North Shore food trucks are good starting points. Some small businesses close or shorten hours on December 25, so do not assume a favorite truck is open.
Whales, hikes and gentler outings
Humpback whale season starts to ramp up in late fall, although North Shore sightings are less frequent than in the Maui channel. Our North Shore whale watching guide covers timing and the federal 100-yard rule. If the surf is too big for the beach, a walk in Haleiwa town is an easy fallback, and teens usually find their own fun, as we describe in our guide to the North Shore with teenagers.
Common holiday-trip mistakes
- Planning to swim. Winter shorebreak and rip currents are real. Follow lifeguards and posted signs.
- Booking late. Holiday weeks are the hardest to fill with a large group.
- Assuming event dates repeat. The parade and the Laie holiday village shift every year.
- Underestimating traffic. Kamehameha Highway is the main road and it jams on parade nights and big-surf days.
Where to stay for a North Shore holiday
A holiday with grandparents, cousins and kids is easier under one roof than across several hotel rooms, and being on the North Shore means the parade, the surf and Laie events are a short drive instead of a long haul from Waikiki. If you are weighing that choice, see our comparison of Waikiki versus the North Shore and our guide to planning a family reunion on the North Shore.
Oahu Whale House sleeps up to 13 guests in the main house, and the Cottage adds room for 8 more, so a big holiday group can stay together. Holiday dates fill early. Text us at (808) 207-6285 to ask about availability.
